In submarine Oliver’s dad is suffering from depression and has since he was Oliver’s age but doesn’t seem to have an help with it which is very sad. The film manages to reach many issues such as: cancer/death, depression, infidelity, love, identity crisis, bullying and probably so much more that I didn’t pick up on, it’s crazy how it managed to show all of these with great respect and yet still be a comedy and have a proper story line. Meanwhile his mum’s ex moves in next door and his dad falls deeper into depression leaving her feel unwanted, Oliver tries to fix this but it’s not till his mum cheats and Oliver breaks into next door do things come to a head and things start to fix themselves. When he meets Jordana (Yasmin Paige) he tries to impress her by helping her bully a girl, when this girl stops turning up to school he writes her a letter which Jordana finds out about and blackmails him and they end up dating. It sounds simple right?, well you’re wrong Oliver is a very complicated kid, he investigates everything, does routine searches of his parents room, spies on neighbours and keeps a diary of everything. Submarine is about a boy -Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts)-, narrating his life through trying to find out who he is by getting a girl friend and trying to prevent his parents crumbling marriage. Fond regards from your protagonist, Oliver Tate.’ I feel the film puts this very well… ‘Submarine is an important film. This is a movie for when you’re feeling deep, you don’t want to watch it halfheartedly you need to fully appreciate it because boy it’ll open your eyes. None of this will matter when I’m 38 but …
